Check the Drain Hose First

Look for a Clogged Filter

Most front load washers, and many top load models, have a small drain filter near the bottom of the machine. Lint, coins, and small items of clothing can get trapped here and block water from draining. Check your owner's manual for the exact location, since it varies by brand.

Inspect the Load Balance

An unbalanced load can sometimes trigger a washer to pause mid-cycle without draining properly, especially with heavy items like comforters or towels. Try redistributing the load evenly and running the cycle again.

Listen for the Drain Pump

During the drain cycle, you should hear a humming sound as the pump pushes water out. If you hear nothing at all, the pump motor itself may have failed. If you hear humming but no water moves, the pump may be jammed with debris.
