Washer Won't Drain? What To Check Before Calling a Technician

Appliance Care Guide · Pompano Beach, FL

Few things are more frustrating than opening your washing machine to find a tub full of standing water. Before you call for help, there are a few simple checks that might solve the problem yourself, or at least help you describe the issue clearly when you do call.

Check the Drain Hose First

The drain hose carries water out of your washer and into your home's plumbing. Over time, this hose can develop a kink, especially if the washer has been moved or pushed too close to the wall. Pull the washer out gently and check that the hose runs in a smooth path without any tight bends.

Look for a Clogged Filter

Most front load washers, and many top load models, have a small drain filter near the bottom of the machine. Lint, coins, and small items of clothing can get trapped here and block water from draining. Check your owner's manual for the exact location, since it varies by brand.

Inspect the Load Balance

An unbalanced load can sometimes trigger a washer to pause mid-cycle without draining properly, especially with heavy items like comforters or towels. Try redistributing the load evenly and running the cycle again.

Listen for the Drain Pump

During the drain cycle, you should hear a humming sound as the pump pushes water out. If you hear nothing at all, the pump motor itself may have failed. If you hear humming but no water moves, the pump may be jammed with debris.

Safety note: Always unplug your washer before checking hoses or filters, and be ready for some water spillage when you open the drain filter.

What If None of This Works?

If you have checked the hose, filter, and load balance and your washer still will not drain, the issue is likely something that needs a trained eye, such as a failed drain pump, a broken belt, or a control board problem. Continuing to run a washer that will not drain can lead to water damage on your floors.
